Why you should choose a waterbirth delivery

Having a baby is the one of the most precious moments for a woman. The happiness of being able to deliver a new life is like nothing else.  Although it comes with great pain, most women will agree it is worth it.

As a San Diego midwife I would like to share with you a method that you might not be aware of.It is also known as waterbirth.

Waterbirth has been described as one of the gentlest ofmethods of deliveries. It utilizes and requires the use of a bath or pool that is heated.  Some women use the water just for the labor part. They will do it because heated water is actually a good pain reliever. It soothes and relaxes the tissues.

Other women will also delivery the baby through it.They remain in the water through the whole delivery.Even till the placenta is delivered all the way through.

The whole process is usuallly performed and helped by someone called a midwife.  If you are in San Diego there are plenty of midwives San Diego.  You will want to find an experienced one.

Why do quite a few women pick this way of delivering over the hosptial method? As mentioned, labor and delivery is very painful.  Most women use drugs to cope with the pain. But for quite a few women they do not want to introduce drugs into their body in fear of harming the baby.Using this method of waterbirth helps reduce the pain.  Because of the
water heated it is soothing to the tissues and helps reduce the pain.

Most women will have this done through a natural process. They usually won’t use any drugs to dull the pain of labor.A lot of times this causes the labor to proceed much faster.Because when you use the drugs it can really slow down the labor.

It is actually a very safe alternative of delivery. For some women who are wanting to have their baby naturally this might be a choice to go with.  I have seen many happy deliveries as a San Diego licensed midwife. All it is going to take is for the woman to go and research a bit and see it for themselves
how safe it is.

How to have a natural birth

One of the sad effects of our modern day and age in medicine is how birth and delivery have become a medical procedure.

That might seem unusual to some because right off the bat people associate delivery with a medical event. But that is the big problem. It isn’t a medical event. It is an event that it is possible to keep it natural and private through alternate methods.  Women
should be made known to the other alternatives.

I would like to present one of those main alternatives from the perspective of a San Diego midwife.

That main alternative is having a homebirth midwife to assist you in your delivery.  This practice is known as midwifery and there are plenty of midwives San Diego.

As the amount of c-sections and induction rates rise in hospitals, it has transformed a very happy moment of delivery into a possible negative experience.

That is a big factor of this push you see of women seeking more natural methods of delivery through midwives that are either certified or licensed.

Labor and delivery doesn’t have to include drugs, invasive procedures, constant probing of private areas, etc.   It can be done safely and effectively in a home environment through that homebirth method or even a waterbirth San Diego method.

It is a service that does have high regulation.  You are able to know of the skill and experience of any midwife you may consider hiring.

But getting beyond that stigma of having a baby not in a hospital but at home takes education. But through statistics and through personal experience a lot of women can see first hand that having the child in a hospital can have negative effect to the whole process. From the drugs they use to slow down pregnancy, or use to speed the pregnancy. To having to be put through a c-section.Hopefully women are able to contrast and compare and see that there are successes in using a midwife.

So for women who seek to keep a birth and delivery a happy occasion, midwifery might be something to look into.

With the dawn of the internet age, being able to find information about the natural process is as simple as doing a search on the internet.

There they can find very helpful information so they can understand the process fully. They are able to see if there are any safety issues and how they are handled.  And most of all they can see how they can truly keep child birth a momentous occasion that can happily and privately as possible.

How to hire the right midwife

Pregnancy, what a wonderful time for a woman.Well, except for the sickness. But beyond that, the new baby coming is an exciting expectation.

Usually, for a lot of women, how they are going to deliver the baby isn’t the big question.  Because most women will go the standard route of a medical procedure involving hospitals, drugs, and doctors.

But for some women, there is an alternative. That alternate way is going through a midwife and having the baby naturally.  And it is that alternative I am going to share from my experience as a San Diego midwife.

For people that don’t know, midwives are women who help natural deliveries without drugs.  This means usually no doctors.

Often times midwives in San Diego perform these services at homes.Although, maybe unusualy for most people, this alternative way to deliver a baby is safe and regulated.

The women, or midwife, who performs this service is fully regulated.  They can come in the form of a licensed midwife or a certified midwife with a regulatory board overseeing them.

Sometimes they can be a nurse, but it is not a requirement.

This form of delivery is an option a lot of women choose and includes waterbirth in San Diego. Most of the time this choice is made by women who prefer not to have any drugs during delivery so that they can keep the new baby away from drugs. Also it is going to be for some women who don’t want invasive procedures.

Well when you are making decisions as big as how you are going to deliver, you obviously want them to be the right choices.  With anything, you want to make sure you pick the right person.

As mentioned before, this industry is highly regulated. With that being the case, finding a good licensed or certified midwife is easy.

All you have to do is find your state regulatory board that  oversees midwives and do a background check to see if there have been any complaints or issues with your prospective midwife.

With this step, you can find out if it is a quality midwife and someone you can trust.Of course when you do see that there are no complaints or bad reports about your midwife, you still want to check references.

You are going to want to find a midwife whose clients speak highly of them.  With something as intimate and important as a delivery following these few steps will help you find the right midwife for your delivery.

Labor and Delivery with Midwifery

Labor and delivery; it brings joy but also pain for the woman.  Obviously joy because of the new baby, but ask any woman, and they will tell you a source of unspeakable pain.

Well because of the pain that woman go through, there are two different schools of thought on how labor and delivery should happen.  I am going to offer some perspective on one particular school of thought that I have gained first hand experience with by being a homebirth midwife San Diego.

There is the medical model for delivering babies which is tied in with using drugs to kill the pain, and sometimes c -sections to finish the delivery.

There is one other model, though not as common or accepted, but for those that practice it and believe in it, consider it a safer alternative for the woman.

That model is called the midwifery model.  That model is in stark contrast with the medical model. The medical model is where you rely heavily on medicine, while the midwifery model relies on the natural.  Midwifery believes that pregnancy and delivery is a natural process and thus should be allowed to happen naturally.

This model is performed by a group called midwives. Midwives San Diego are generally woman, who attend the birth, often times at the mother’s home. This midwife would help with some techniques that help the woman go through labor as naturally as possible without drugs.

Contrary to most people’s opinion, when medicine is not used during labor, it allows the labor to proceed much faster without the use of drugs to slow the labor down.

The midwife is a profession that has a regulatory board that oversees, certifies, and licenses the individual.

Although a lot of the times they are not a nurse or a doctor, a midwife sometimes is a nurse also.

Even though they are not formal doctors or nurses, they will have some medical equipment for emergencies like resuscitation devices and equipment for suturing.

So in regards to pregnancy and delivery this is what a midwife is and generally what midwifery is about.

Their objective is to let the labor and delivery to occur as naturally as possible. This makes the likelihood of a c-section less likely.Does not subject you to hospital procedures that are invasive such as episiotomys. There will be less use of managing it with medical techniques such as breaking the water or using any types of drugs for the pregnancy. And for the woman the best part of all is that labor and delivery usually happen quicker naturally.

Hopefully this was informative and helped you understand some of the benefits of midwifery and having a midwife there for your pregnancy. At the very least, it gives you some different options to look into and explore.  Remember this is first hand knowledge from a San Diego midwife.

Are Homebirths Safe?

Having your baby at home? Who would even think of such a thing? Wasn’t that just back in the western days when doctor’s had to deliver babies at home out on the prairie?

Not so.  There is a large group of women who are discovering the benefts of having a baby at home, or homebirth as it is sometimes called.

The practice of homebirths is usually called midwifery.  Although not doctors or nurses, people in this line of work called midwifery are professionally regulated.  I myself have seen the steady rise of homebirths through my practice as a San Diego certified midwife.

The people, generally women, who perform this line of work are called homebirth midwives.  Midwives is a more common term that people are familiar with and means a person who attends childbirth and provides support during labor and delivery.

Now why a midwife is usually not a doctor or nurse is because the practice of having your baby at home, or midwifery is generally the belief that pregnancy and birth are natural normal events.  This is in stark contrast with the medical model which relies on medicine to assist and improve the pregnancy and delivery.

With that aside, lets look at why a lot of women are having babies at home rather than hospitals.  What benefits are making women choose homebirths?

First off, with the continued presence of the midwife, the length of labor can be reduced.  Most women aren’t told that pain medications actually slows down the labor, even though it helps with the pain.  This in reality causes the pain and the labor to last much longer.

Second, the techniques of midwifery actually reduces the likelihood of the need for forceps or other operative devices during delivery.  The technique of letting the birth and delivery to occur naturally is what reduces the need to use those devices.

Third, is it reduces the possibility of a cesarean delivery.  Most c-sections happen when during labor, it was thought that a natural birth process was not possible.  Either because of the safety of the baby was in mind or the safety of the mother.  Well in all actuality that complication was caused because the natural process was not allowed to happen.

These are 3 benefits when you have a natural homebirth.  There are many more, but I am sure most women in pregnancy would agree these are 3 huge benefits.

So even though some might call it strange to have a child at home, recent studies indicate that allowing a natural birth to happen is much safer for the mom and the baby.  With over 300 births attended as a homebirth midwife in San Diego, this has proven to be the case time and time again.
